Q&A #2
Q: The original rules for this years competition stated that the specific ball to use is the Rawlings .47 cor 12" softball. We now have 24 of the $2.99 balls. The new rules now state they must be AWA approved .47 cor 12". Since those Rawlings softballs are not AWA approved, does that disqualify them from use? Or do we (meaning all teams) have to purchase the $5.99
version of the softballs?
A: No, you can use the original spec balls. The reason we changed the requirement was that many teams had said the original spec ball was no longer available, so we wanted to "open up" the range of allowable balls. If anyone has a good source (on the net so everyone can get them) for a cheap 12" .47 COR ball please drop me an e-mail and I'll pass it on.
Q: If we cover fixed landing gear legs with a airfoil shape is it counted as an empenage and added to rated aircraft cost?
A: No.
Q: If we make a large vertical tail that extends from above to below of the fuselage (or wing), is it counted as two vertical tails?
A: This question was also asked over the summer (and I didn't reply then as I wanted to wait until all teams would get the same information). If you have a vertical that extends both above and below the fuselage, and the rudder is one piece extending the full height of the surfaces from below to above the fuselage, then it is a single vertical (however the area calculation must include the area hidden inside the fuselage). If the rudder is in two separate parts, one below the fuselage and one above the fuselage then it is two verticals, and the area of each is just the exposed area. If the rudder is only on one part, either the section above the fuselage or the section below the fuselage, then it is also two verticals.
Q: Our team is attempting to decide the nature of the vehicle we will renting
in Wichita. To help decide this I would like to know what type of hanger
space will be available to the teams this year. Thinking back to two years
ago, the space allotted in the Cessna Experimental Aircraft hanger was
minimal. This year's planes will be on the order of twice the span of the
planes from two years ago. Will there be more space available this time
around? We need to know if we need to rent a semi to hold our airplane and provide working space.
A: We are still working out details of the flyoff site, so we don't have
any data yet. I wouldn't count on any *more* space than we had in
1999/2000. We will try to provide enough space for each team to get their aircraft into shelter, but as before all crates of tools, parts, chairs, etc will have to be stored outside. Parking space may be limited as well, so please coordinate your needs with us. If you want to setup a small tent outside to do work we should be able to accommodate that.
Remember to send any questions for the next Q&A edition.
