A) No. The controller is considered part of the motor, and falls under the restrictions to be an "over the counter" production part. Questions from USC: Q) Will the pitcrew be required to stay "behind-the-wall" until the airplane crosses the S/F line and stops (or in a designated box)? A) The pit crew will be required to stay at a holding spot until the aircraft returns to the Start/Finish line, the motor is stopped, and the aircraft stops rolling. The "box" will be located about 50-100 ft to the side of the S/F line. If the aircraft runs off the runway or is otherwise unable to return to the S/F line the crew must remain in the "box" until the aircraft stops all forward motion. If wind conditions are such that the team elects to use "wing walkers" to assist the aircraft in taxi back to the S/F line, the aircraft must first come to a complete stop before the ground crew may go out to assist the aircraft. Q) Will the turn judge flag a complete stop or will it be crew judgement (starting gun problem). A) We will have the starting line judge call when it is OK for the ground crew to go to the aircraft. Q) Where will the judges bottle receptacle be? Does the payload need to be delivered to the judges before the new one is installed? A) The "new" payload may be in the "box" with the crew. The "old" payload will be returned to a holding area adjacent to the "box". The "old" payload does not have to be in the holding area before the aircraft begins it's next takeoff, but all of the ground crew must be safely clear of the aircraft. We will have the starting line judge call "all clear" to signal when a takeoff can begin. Q) Is the maximum on-field presence 5 people? A) Yes. Pilot, Observer, and 3 crew is maximum. You may have fewer if the pilot or observer is also part of the groung crew. If the pilot/oberver are NOT part of the ground crew, they may not assist with the loading/unloading, or with assisting the aircraft to return to the S/F line. -Greg Gregory S.
